The colonial casas of Trinidad. Founded in 1514 Trinidad grew fabulously rich due to sugar profits. Thousands of African slaves harvested cane from the nearby Valley of the Sugar Mills. One sugar baron had so much money he wanted to pave the street outside his city centre palace with coins. He was told to go stick it by the authorities who said the face of the Spanish king, imprinted on the coins, could not be trampled on. Voyaging around Cuba with @seadreamyc

Sugar baron and dealer Acisclo del Valle had deep pockets & an enormous ego. He built this Moorish mini palace on Punta Gorda, Cienfuegos in Cuba. It’s topped by three towers: the one dedicated to religion now houses the bar. It’s the best spot in the city for a sunset drink. Cienfuegos turns 200 this year.
